My Hot and Heavy Love Affair with God Got Off to a Rocky Start

But oh were those some hella fascinating rocks!

You might say God and I have had an on-and-off relationship over the years even though it’s solidly on right now and has been for years.

And let me pause here and thank Nancy for an invitation to explore my journey here in Refresh the Soul.

We kinda took God for granted in my loosely Jewish family. We went to synagogue on the High Holy Days, Rosh Hashana, and Yom Kippur. We lit Chanukah candles and exchanged gifts.

For a while, we went to Shabbat services on Friday nights when there was a synagogue to go to. This wasn’t always the case, given my dad was in the military and we moved a lot.

So if God was watching us, it was from a distance.

We never talked about Him or Her or It. And I never saw my parents pray or meditate. Until the 70s…when they, very uncharacteristically, got mantras and started meditating Transcendentally. They didn’t talk about it. They just did it.

What I learned about God turned me off

That was the Jewish Yahweh. The jealous, vengeful, revengeful God who smote all the enemies of His chosen people, in exchange for fierce loyalty. And I do…
